Cycling America Supporting Senior Health is intended to demonstrate that a couple of gals, one in her 60's and one in her 70's, along with a 72 year old support person can do crazy things like cycle across the southern route of the US. We hope this encourages others our age to get out and do things for thier well being.

No special bikes, no large panniers, sleeping bags, tin cups and camp stoves. We will be taking our refurbished 26' Airstream camper. We will also stop at a motel once in awhile for a "good" shower  and sleep.

We plan on riding every mile of the route from San Diego to Florida keeping in mind that noone says you have to ride it all in the same direstion. If it looks like hills are going to be a problem on a given day we may have to drive 50 or 60 miles down the route and ride that section backwards.

We start on February,16 or so and we will take that time to give an idea of how we are preparing.

Succeed or fail we welcome your comments, encouragement of laughs ....

  3. Going well. Camper and truck both loaded except for a few items we packed seperatly for the actual roadtrip to San Diego.

  4. Great start today. We got all the way to Browerville (about 25 Miles) and the right front window on the camper broke. We continued on to Long Prairie where we know the RV dealer. he said that to order a window and get it in would take about 2 to 3 weeks. Well that was out of the question so... he put clear plastic on it held on by duct tape. Not only do we have an old camper, we now have an old Airstream patched up with duct tape.

We got Jan loaded and will be on our way to KC Kansas tomorrow morning.

  10. The last few days have been great. We had a chance to do our first night with out hook ups for the camper. Great experience and the Vintage Airstream did just fine. Our stay was in the Imperial Valley Dunes Federal Park. Its one of California's playgrounds for Dune Buggies, 4 wheelers and it even has a portion set aside for walking. 40 miles long and 25 miles wide it supports up to 200,000 people on weekends. No hook ups, no electricity and no water. You have to support yourself out there.

Peg and Jan have had good days but it has been hard. They haven't ridden since October so they are taking some tome to train as we go. Walking a few hills, driving ahead and riding some backwards and even skipping a few with extreme winds, snow and grades to steep to go up or down.

    ReplyDelete
  11. After the Imperial valley dunes, Peg and Jan started up through the Chocolate Mountains. A lot of up and down but generally down hill for a lot of the day. There are no towns or facilities through the entire area so they had me provide the support along the way. I would pull ahead 10 or so miles and wait for them to cover that 10 miles then move ahead again. It worked well.

We spent the night just south of Palo Verde in a city camp ground with no facilities so we had the pleasure of conserving water and electricity for another night. We were on the Colorado river with Arizona on the other side of the river. It would be another 30+ miles before they get to Arizona however.

  12. So in 5 days Peg and Jan have ridden through the busy city of San Diego, experienced the snows, winds and grades of Mountains east of San Diego down through the Yuha dessert through the Imperial valley farm land then into the Imperial valley Dunes at Glamis then through the Chocolate Mountians. Then through the east Imperial valley on into Arizona today.

  13. Peg and Jan thought it was time to give a little information about themselves and what they are doing. They are not ready yet to get on the blog and start commenting but will shortly I'm sure.

The start of the idea of riding the southern tier came about when they were riding one of the longer rides in the Minneapolis area about 15 years ago. They met a woman who had just completed it at quite an elderly age. The woman looked fit and attractive and not near her actual age, After that Peg and Jan started riding the MS Ride Across Minnesota (TRAM) and did it for 9 years. They are waiting for the right one to do their 10th TRAM. Then Parts of the Ragbrai for the last 3 years.

  14. Peg rides a Specialized Dolce elete, Jan rides a Specialized Sequoia and they are using my Specialized Roubaix as the spare.

They are using Bike maps from Adventure Cycling which includes notes along the way as to what's available for services and what has recently been closed etc. All in all pretty good maps and information.

We have a 25 ft 1969 vintage Airstream trailer pulled by a 2002 Chevy pickup. We sport CASSH signs on the doors of the pickup and have a banner when stopped for the night.

Part of Peg and Jans' idea is to demonstrate that an activity like this can be done with some comfort and not to much expense. Although we would love to be in a $300,000 rig you don't have to be. In addition when people think about long bike rides they think panniers, bedrolls, tents, tin pots and campfires. It doesn't have to be that either.

As you can see we are traveling rather cheaply and in relative comfort. They hope to inspire others in their 60s 70s and older to figure out a way to get out and do things.

  16. Yesterday was a great day. although a lot of uphill riding Peg and Jan are getting used to the hills now and seem to plow right through them. There's not much for towns along this route so I'm continuing to pull ahead 10 or so miles and they catch up take a break and then I go another 10 miles. If I got it figured right I only have another 300 or so times to do that.

On one of those stops, two older gals started a conversation because they saw the Airstream and since they are part of the Airstream club around here wanted to see it. Then they noticed the CASSH magnetic sigh on the door and were really carious. We were then invited to park the trailer that night at Ken and Jill Shucks hanger at the Salome airport. Its a private airport where the hangers are part of the house in some cases and Ken and Jills' case they park their Airstream right in the hanger along with two cars and their Cessna 150. We parked alongside the hanger and hooked up to Electricity and water.

In addition to the invitation to spend the night at the Hanger, Barb Vathn the other woman with Jill asked where we were going to be on Thursday night. W said Wickenberg. They then told me about the Airstream Ralley in Wickenberg this weekend and asked if we would be the entertainment Thursday night. Since Peg and Jan were still several miles back I made a unilateral decision and said of course we would.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Today was another adventurous day. Peg lost air in her front tire and I had to go back about 8 miles and get it changed.

We arrived in Wickenberg AZ and got a free camp spot with water and electric another night at the Rally. There are probably about 20 Airstreams and 40 people and we seem to be the center of attention. We gave a little presentation and Peg and Jan got a lot of questions. I think they really enjoyed it. We were the lead in for a great country western singer guitar player that entertained the crowd right after us.

We also got an offer for free parking in Phoenix tomorrow night if we want it. Not sure if we will take it since we plan on a full day off Saturday. Maybe even a motel room for a real shower.

  18. We hope to have Peg and Jan commenting in the next few days. As you might imagine, after a day of riding they just haven't felt like heading off to a spot with WIFI to enter their thoughts.

Two things I've noticed in the last couple of days. First, Peg and Jan have become much more confident and I believe committed to seeing this through all the way to Florida. Second, now that they have 400 or so miles and a lot of tough terrain behind them people are really starting to notice... The comments are positive and they get a lot of encouragement.

  19. Hi All;
Ray and Marshelle stopped in yesterday and told us what you are up to. What an adventure! I give all of you credit for doing it. We've been to Wickenberg, AZ.

We were at the UOM this week for Doug and on the way home I said we should stop to see Rabe's sometime when we aren't in a hurry. Little did we know you are out doing great things.

Love your sense of humor; keep up the good work and blog.

  20. On Friday Peg and Jan rode from Wickenburg to Phoenix. The gals said the first 50 or so miles were great then they started to get into Phoenix traffic and things turned slow and a bit frustrating with the lights and traffic.

It amazes me some days that they can ride a 6 inch wide line down a highway with trucks whizzing by at 65 MPH and keep right on ridding. I think they have found that generally truck drivers are more aware and courteous than car drivers. They went down the Phoenix Canal bike path and from there we loaded up and drove to Mesa where we found a park with hookups.

  21. Nice day Saturday. Replenished groceries. (1/2 the price they were in the small towns in the high desert). We got some bike parts like tubes and tires. We have patch kits along but find that most times the leaks are from around the valve stem making it impossible to repair. We also got red flashing strobes for the back of the bikes. Of course we had to get some parts for the Airstream. Plug for the water inlet, new waste gate for the flush system and some cabinet latches. The dump gate leaks jus a little so I've decided to change it. As you campers out there know, I'm becoming very familiar with human nature or nature human...how ever you want to put it.

  22. Sunday was another light day but they did ride. We had decided that we would make sure to take Sunday mornings off and go to church. So normally we would take the entire day off but since the girls had ridden for 8 strait days we decided to take a day and 1/2. They did ride up to the first pass going east (about 2700 ft) but have a ways to go. In the next few days they ride the highest points of the entire route up over 7000 ft. So this week is going to be the biggest challenge so far.

We are not sure what is ahead but they keep amazing me with what they are capable of. We will stock the trailer with a full complement of water for drinking and showers, empty waste tanks, full generator and full spare gas tanks for the generator and groceries for a few days.

There are times when we are unable to get a data link so a day may pass with out an update.

We woke up this morning to the phone ringing at 5:45 telling us school was closed for the day due to the snow! Fell back to sleep to have Alex run in at 7:45 saying...Mom, Dad its 745 we are late! ;-) nice surprise for him and Madelyn hearing no school. Jon took them to Buck Hill for the day while we work from home.

  27. Monday
Peg and Jan started at Gonzales Pass and had a short ride down but started right back up. Gonzales pass is a little under 2500 ft and the next pass is about 4000 ft. The roads are mountain roads here with limited shoulders so the ride is really on the white line. They also had a tunnel to go through today and it looked so dangerous the I walked back through the tunnel (1/4 to 1/2 mile) and waited for them. The problem was it was narrow and I couldn't see anything for the first 100 to 200 feet after entering the tunnel and there was just a narrow ledge the walk on and you couldn't walk and have the bike on the ledge at the same time.

As they walked their bikes through, I tried to move traffic over a little. There were two lanes up and one down. when the trucks saw me they immediately signaled and started to move to the inside lane. Cars not so smart. I think we are gaining a respect for truck drivers. This got us through Signal mountain Pass

That little episode was a vivid reminder that these roads can be dangerous so Peg and Jan put a new plan in place where if it was just to dangerous we would load up and drive it until it felt safer. Just after the plan was in place, Peg hit a fairly large rock and fell. A few bruises and cuts on her legs and Jan had her patched up in no time. After Globe AZ, the road was down hill with good shoulders and a tail wind all the way to Peridot.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Peridot, on the San Carlos Apache Indian reservation was an interesting experience. We didn't see much for camping facilities and from signs indicating permits were available in Globe, we knew we need some kind of OK to stay overnight in the reservation. We spotted a couple of tribal police guys and they pointed us in the direction of the general store that was connected to the tribal hospital. I went to services and asked for a permit and they said the price was $20.00 per day. I said OK and THEN THE CLERK SAID THAT WILL BE $40.00. When I asked, the clerk said the day runs from midnight to midnight so I needed a 2 day pass to stay over night. I smiled and paid the bill. We knew it had to be government related and that it made perfect sense to her.

We found a spot on the rodeo grounds in Peridot and yes there were piles of rodeo evidence around. The gals were exhausted so after dinner it was early to bed. We didn't even start the generator.

Peoidot is exactly what you might imagine in the desert country of the southwest. Trash all over, dogs wandering around and really, a couple of guys up on the horizon looking down over the rodeo grounds.

In the morning we woke to a little kid crying outside the door and when I went out dad or granddad was walking toward us and the little guy cried harder and harder. Dad got there and took his hand and said he don't want to go to school. they wandered off in the direction of the school.

  29. Tuesday morning started with Highway 70 eastbound blocked just a mile east of Peridot. It seems a truckload of batteries tipped over and because it was hazardous material the road was shut down at about 4am. Peg and Jan wanted to get started at about 8am but the patrol told them that even Bikes would not be allowed through. By 10am we heard that it was a fatal. By that time they had taken 2 dump trucks full of batteries out of the site and that it would take until 2pm to get the site cleared up.

We decided to take an alternate route through the Coolage dam area which was a 40 mile detour but also an alternate bike route. These were the worst roads we have ever seen and the Coolege (sp) dam is not much right now. Drought conditions out here are terrible and there is very little water in the lakes behind the dams. Every door and drawer of the camper was open when we got through the detour and the water intake connection to the toilet was broken...

  30. The rest of Tuesday went much better although the wind was directly in Peg and Jan's face the entire afternoon. They did it though...god bless them.

We found a beautiful state campsite just 5 miles south of Safford AZ. Real showers, electricity water and a beautiful climate. We had planned on unhooking and going into Safford for dinner but it was so pleasant we had quidellas (sp casadieas) for dinner.

This morning I'm filling everything up for the next 150 barren miles of limited services.

It may be a couple of days to get back to the blog...

From Stafford peg and Jan went east On 191toward Three Way AZ. At Three Way they went north about 14 miles before switch backs no shoulders And steep inclines beat them for awhile. We trucked it over the 6350 ft pass and started again in Mule Creek and piled another 30 miles on after the 30 some already done. Tail winds Do help.

We spent the night in a church lot in Cliff NM.We did it WO
Hook ups so water power and toilet management went into effect. We are getting used to it out in the west as facilities really are limited out here.

  33. Thursday 3/8
Peg and Jan started toward Silver City NM this morning. Peg's ankle seemed to returned to near normal but she could still feel it. Jan had a flat tire even before they started out. Just pumped it up and it lasted the day. The ride was only about 35 to 40 miles but nearly all uphill again. After they crossed the divide it was downhill into Silver city.

At one of out 10 or so mile rest stops there was a couple of road bike riders coming from the east and they turned around just at that corner to head back east toward Silver City. It was strange but they just looked at us with mild curiosity and started back. Not sure why but in might have been that Jan and Peg both had their helmets off one with red hair sticking strait out from her head and one a beautiful grey. Or it could have been me due to a couple of days of self contained camping or it could have been the dusty camper and pickup with bright signs on the door or we are close to Roswell so it could have been a combination of all.

I pulled ahead another 8 miles passing the curious couple on the way and when they caught up with me they verified that it must have Jan and Peg with out helmets because the didn't seem to be afraid to stop when it was just me and the camper. Turns out that they are the owners of the KOA campground 3 miles east of Silver City and we were offered a discount for the night and Jan for free. Great facilities worth a recommendation if you are in the area.

In Silver City today. Woke up to rain and a forecast of strong and gusty winds in the afternoon. I said a little rain wouldn't hurt them and the strong gusty winds might not start until later in the day...and for sure the mix of show and rain wouldn't start until after noon, I was dismissed as only Peg and Jan can do, heard some discussion about shopping in Old Town Silver City and guess where I am now.

Snow on the ground this morning and when I got up the temp was 29 so Peg slept in Jan read. We never thought we would be delayed by snow/sleet and high winds but here we are. Peg and Jan are discussing options with the owner of the KOA and think if it does not improve dramatically in the mountains by tomorrow morning they will detour through Deming and then to Las Cruces and down to El Paso.

The Airstream gets smaller every day we are idle ... so today they suggested I get out and find something to do.

  39. Sunday 3/10
Finally out of Silver City NM. It was however a nice stay thanks to Jim and Jackie Blurton, owners of the KOA just 3 miles east of Silver City. They have the cleanest well maintained facility we have seen. We highly recommend it if you ever get out this way. Although we normally do not do this kind of thing, this is worthy. Phone...575-388-3351.

Based on discussion of options with Jackie, the girls decided that they would alter the route and go south through Deming then east to Los Cruses then down to El Paso. It was also recommended that we trailer through El Paso due to traffic and a shortage of courtesy.

About 20 miles into the ride today Peg ended up with a rear tire flat. Changed Tube and when Peg tried it out she found a flat front tire. Apparently they had run through a lot of glass and Pegs tires went flat. With one more tube and a new tire (one of those fold up tires) we fixed the front tire. Peg is now out of tubes and tires. Couldn't find a bike shop open in Las Cruces or El Paso so I have a job in the morning.

We are rejoining the regular route in east El Paso tomorrow morning. We are a little sad to leave the hospitality of Arizona and New Mexico but look forward to what's ahead.

  42. Monday 3/11
Peg and Jan rode over 50 today. The last few days we've had a lot of trouble with weather and flat tires. I had the opportunity to talk to an old field hand about the difference in field activity than it was back in the imperial valley. I think he was the only resident of McNary Texas. I guess Texas is really in severe drought and has been for awhile. No Water, no pecans, no alfalfa and nothing else growing either.

I asked how far we were from the border and he pointed south to point out the two dark lines cutting across the mountains. Yep that's the dual fence between US and Mexico. This is really desolate area and looks abandoned.

Monday was a good ride. wind in the back and flat. We spent the night at Esperanza. There was a beautiful farm or ranch place as we entered what we thought was a town but 1/2 mile later we saw the sigh indicating the other border of Esperanza. We wandered around a little and found a place just off the road that the trailer and truck would fit in. Another self contained night in a very desolate area. Gals were tired so we didn't even start the generator.

  43. Tuesday 3/12
A very interesting night and day for Peg and Jan. It was absolutely dark and quiet. Both Peg and Jan slept lightly and were pretty sure they heard chayote calls. It was a desolate night.

In the morning jan noticed there was a fresh pile of horse manure (yes we were all farm kids so we know what it looks like) and horse tracks on the back side of the camper. We apparently had a visitor whether it was a horse alone or horse and rider, we don't know.

After Peg and Jen started in the morning they ran into a Border Patrol agent driving slow and apparently looking for tracks along the road. shortly after they saw another and then the third one finally stopped them and asked if they had seen two men walking in the area. They hadn't, they then asked the Patrolman if these men were dangerous and they told them they could be so if you see them avoid them.

  44. Tuesday 3/13 Later...
Caught up with Peg and Jan just as they were going to get onto I 10. Just after they went over a cattle guard Peg had a blow out om the back tire. I got that fixed then as they were starting to roll out Peg had a flat on the front. Got that foxed and then they started again and Peg heard Jan's back tire loosing air. So within a distance of 100 feet we had 3 flats to deal with.

The first 25 miles were up hill and pretty steep on the freeway and frontage road. Once they managed that they ran into 10 mph head winds with gusts to 25. Well the 60 planned turned into 52 but I give them a lot of credit today for the effort. Start at 8:30 or so and work like heck until 5:30.

We are safely in the KOA in Van Horn Texas tonight....

  45. Wednesday 3/14
Nice stay in Van Horn Texas. Peg and Jan decided to take 90 from Van Horn to Alpine Texas. They got 50 of the 110 in and we stayed w/o permission just inside the gate of the Ryan Ranch road. Again isolated but we felt a lot safer than the night in Esperanzo.

The last 10 miles of the day were terrible I guess. The road was very rough and hard to ride.
They were glad to see the camper parked along the road.

After a long hard day Peg and Jan were ready to relax and hit the sack early but after a change from Pacific time to Mountain time then Daylight savings time and then todays change to Central has us a little screwed up.

Nice ride today toward Alpine Texas. They got through Marfa Texas which seems to be a real art community. Several art galleries and a beautiful Southwest town. On Wednesday the Girls passed this typical adobe building painted white with PRADA written across the front of it. I guess I went by it too but didn't notice. They stopped and the building was locked but had a display of real Prada products in the windows. They found a plaque a few yards from the building explaining that it was a work of art presented by a museum in Marfa. So when we got to Marfa (with a Dairy Queen) they took a little time to look around.

They got through Marfa a few miles and we had to stop riding to prepare for a phone interview with a reported from the Redwood Falls MN paper. That cut a couple of hours out of the day so we drove the last few miles to Alpine Texas which is a college town and very well kept also.

We have about 150 miles from Del Rio which is the next major city we are going to. We should be in there Sun or Monday and then the girls might need a day or two to regroup.

We have two nights coming up in the dessert with out hookups and for sure with out internet. We are finding that we kind of enjoy the self contained nights out in the dessert.

P&J (I'm taking Dolli's advice) rode a hard 50 today and I think it wore them out. We found a ranch site right near the road and asked if we could park on their property. They said sure if we could put up with 4 dogs and 4 grandchildren roaring around on 4 wheelers. It was a pleasant stay and the Kids were great.

P&J decided that after the last few days they needed a little time off. They rode about 40 miles today and we stopped at a town called Sanderson Texas. As you can see we unexpectedly found a campsite with WIFI and full hookups.

Sanderson is the county seat of Terrell County. The population of Sanderson is 875 and the population of Terrell County is 982. I think we talked to most of the population of the county that do not live in Sanderson. The people at the ranch site we stayed at and the Rancher I stopped to tell that I saw cows in the ditch a couple of miles back. The rancher said yeah those are Coxes cows. I'll give him a call and let him know...thanks for stopping.

Sitting here looking at the white band where I wear my watch. Peg is on her ipad and Jen is reading so I thought I would blog a little.

After hooking up the camper we noticed we seemed surrounded by county Sheriff trucks. There are 3 county deputies stationed here and all have trailers at this camp. We probably don't have to worry to much about locking up tonight.

One of Sanderson's claims to fame is that this town was so rough that Judge Roy Bean was driven out of town. Seems that Roy Bean owned a saloon here and a competitive saloon keeper kept spiking his whiskey barrels with Kerosene and drove him out of business. He then moved to Langtree Texas where he developed a reputation as the hanging judge.

When we stop for a day off one of the things we like to do is go out for a hamburger. This town has 4 restaurants and none were open for dinner on a Saturday night. The closest restaurant would be back in Alpine 90 miles back. So quidillas (SP) again tonight.

Church in the morning then just relax for the day. Off to Del Rio Monday and it should take 2 days.

  54. Sunday 3/17

Church today. Again we found a Church of Christ. There were a few cars around and a sign indicating services at 10:30. P&J tried the door to the church and found it locked. They then walked around and found a door open in an adjacent building and peeked in. They quickly backed out because it looked like a few people in a bible study class. The bible class quickly called us back in and we got a warm welcome. We believe they then changed and decided a service was in order so they quickly put the service together. The congregation consisted of an accountant his wife and son, a church elder who was the Principle of schools here in Sanderson for many years and stayed and his wife , a rancher, predator trapper for the State of Texas and Hunting guide on his ranch and us. Singing and a nice teaching sermon turned into a very nice experience.

We were then invited to lunch at the American Legion and met a bunch more people from here. P&J have given me the day off today. Jan is doing the wash and Peg is straitening the trailer and vacuuming.

The road to Del Rio looks downhill and if we can get a little west or northwest wind the next couple of days it should be a nice ride. Yesterday the girls said the last 40 miles into Sanderson was all down and the wind was right behind them. 15 to 20 miles per hour and in one case they did not pedal for over 10 miles. That gives you a little idea of what it might be like when the opposite conditions occur uphill and into the wind. The speed is from 6 to 9 mph.

    1. Thank you Steve.

We all come from small towns where services might be held in a persons home or a small church where some one had to go start the fire before the service. We also like a teaching message and yours was wonderful.

The hospitality shown by you and your people also moved us. Right now we are sitting here in the Canyons camp ground in the shade reading and remarking on how wonderful the day has been.

Again, thank you for the hospitality and I hope to revisit in the future with my son and grandson.

Sanderson to Langtry Tx. P&J said the ride was delightful. Wind to the back for the second day and they rode 15 to 20 mph most of the day.

Langtry, well it consists of a post office, a Judge Roy Bean museum two stores no longer open, 4 to 5 houses and a few buildings in various stages of collapse. It also has a full hookup camp ground that was hard to recognize. In MN we would call it a vacant lot in need of a cleanup. Through the weeds however we found hookups just as the owner walked up and asked for $20.00. We were the only ones there and all worked fine. A very relaxing evening with Spaghetti and French bread for dinner.

  59. Tuesday 3/19
P&J toured the Judge Roy Bean museum before hitting the road. They commented that it was the most well maintained Museum they had seen. In addition they had a cactus garden that made them want to start one of their own. It was beautifully laid out and quite a few were in bloom. We spotted two areas of green grass and the manager pointed out that they were part of the city septic system.

Seems that Judge Roy Bean was a character. Owned several saloons, had trouble with the law in the US and Mexico, was a promoter and when Texas outlawed Boxing he moved the operation over to the Mexican side of the border. He had a fascination with Lilly Langtry a British actress that was quite famous.

The ride today was hard. Wind from the south east exactly in their face and the maps forgot to note that there was hills from Langtry to where they ride sharply down to cross the Pecos river then right back up again. Because of the wind, hills and busy road conditions they decided to load the bikes for the last few miles into Del Rio.

  60. Wednesday 3/20

Del Rio stay was nice. Even found an Applebys for dinner and did a little grocery shopping.

As P&J left Del Rio they went by Laughlin Air Force Base just east of Del Rio. Laughlin is a training base for new pilots and is a bee hive of activity and the approach activity was just over head as they rode east on 90. As the aircraft were roaring overhead they heard a toot- toot and Jan loudly said "Planes don't toot". (You had to be there)Apparently there were Planes overhead, trucks to their left and trains to their right all happening at the same time. Seems that P&J are developing a relationship with trains. They never fail to give them a little toot-toot when they go by. Kind of a nice and comforting thing when they are out in the middle of nowhere.

Wide shoulders and low winds helped get 50 miles in Wednesday. Into Uvalia tonight.

  63. Wednesday 3/20

The landscape changed today. About 5 miles west of Uvalde Tx we started to see green from time to time. Towns changed. Towns in parts of Arizona, New Mexico and Texas are mostly reminiscent of what was. Buildings boarded up, some dilapidated and very few people if any. Towns here are bigger, occupied and have Walmarts and everything. Landscape changed and we are seeing irrigated fields with green crops. For days, it has been sagebrush, cactus, a few goats or sheep and not much else. P&J actually saw real trees today.

Last night P&J got in a little giggling session (maybe initiated by a little wine) and talked about crossing the Pecos River which is a two lane bridge, quite high and subject to wind gusts. As some of you may know, Jan has a little problem with heights so she was riding right down the middle of the bridge and stayed there with Peg yelling JAN, GET OUT OF THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. She just kept peddling as fast as she could and made it across.

The Uvalde stay was nice. P&J met a lady mail carrier in Knippa TX and said she had seen P&J a couple of days ago and asked where are they going. As P&J described their adventure she said YOU GO GIRLS!!

P&J rode a good 50 miles yesterday. Uvalde to Hondo. Fairly flat and wind to the side so not a major factor. Vic joined the crowd for awhile.

Found what I thought was a good camp ground but a lot of bitching and complaining about no showers. Not sure what the big deal is because we have a shower in the camper. After awhile everything seemed to be OK and we were back to normal.

Chicken and steak on the grill and everybody is happy. quiet day today.

P&J rode from Hondo to the start of the freeway system into San Antonio. We picked them up at that point and went straight north of the city to Boerne TX which is a tourist town just NW of San Antonio. The gals have reached the half way point of the trip and decided to take a day off and could think of no better place than the shopping Mecca of NW San Antonio.

Quite a mile stone actually. About 1600 miles of the 3067 total. Its hard to appreciate what these gals are doing until you drive 10 or 15 miles thinking about what they are riding and then think that they are doing it 5 to 6 times a day.

Tonight, dinner at the Dog and Pony Grill for a Texas style dinner. Big burgers, great French fries and pretty good Texas beer. (and a little wine)

On P&J's day off they had a great time getting their hair and nails done. Then they spent the day in the shops of historic Boerne. P&J made a very nice dinner of home made sausage and potatoes. After dinner we went to a classic car show in Boerne.

The cops from Adam 12 (an old TV Series for those of you that are too young)with their original Series car were at the car show and arresting people. We managed to get a picture or two of P&J getting arrested and lectured by the police for something (probably over shopping).

The weather is getting colder but P&J plan on starting from Blanco Texas in the morning. We will have to get a fairly early start because we have a 45 mile drive from here northwest to Blanco before they can start.

  68. Sunday 3/24

We got started early and arrived in Blanco TX at about 10am. (We detoured a little into San Antonio so we are going straight north to pick back up on the original route.) The trip up to Blanco was beautiful with rolling hills and nice roads. If the trip east from here is like that, P&J will be happy.

It is really cold and windy this morning but P&J are determined. Long pants, gloves and extra jackets should keep them warm.

They rode about 20 minutes and figured out it was difficult to ride in 20 to 25 mph winds with 40 plus mph gusts. Well, they might have figured it out in less than 20 minutes but are determined. Winds should be down tomorrow but still cold. After crossing deserts, mountains and high plains they didn't expect to be stopped by Texas wind. They are hoping that they can start in the morning.

Still cold and windy. I took the bikes out to the road and set them there and pointed in the right direction for them but when the wind blew them over I guess I lost the argument. P&J have really become independent, they don't listen to the coach much. Maybe I get confused as to whether I'm the coach or the cook.

At about 11:00 the wind slowed down and it warmed up enough to ride. Even with the late start they got 40 plus miles in. They met a lot of riders today. There were 6 men riding west to east that passed us. P&J talked to their support person and found that they try to do in excess of 100 miles per day and gave them selves about 6 weeks to do the entire trip. 2 were on regular bikes and 4 had recumbent bikes. In addition we saw a man going from east to west today also. So far we have only seen one gal doing the southern route.

All in all a nice ride today and a comfortable stay at the Plum Creek camp ground in Kyle TX.

Went out to find a heater for the tent and had a tough time. Two things going on at once. The stores are putting them away due to what they thought was the end of the season and there is a heck of a cold spell so everyone is looking for heaters. Finally at Lowes the store manager pulled some out of storage and by the time we got finished there were 2 more people needing heaters.

We stayed at a beautiful state Park last night near Smithville. Still have easterly winds but the hills are getting more gentle so rideable.

P&J are going to ride hard for a few days and take Easter Sunday off.

    1. Hi Gino and family,
The gals have learned when all the factors start to add up against them so they make those safety decisions daily and hourly. Rough roads, bad weather, narrow shoulders, intense traffic are the mail factors.

Earlier this week they had a situation where the guide map said very little traffic but we got o=in the area just as the largest Antique Fair in the South West was opening. The road was narrow, a dangerous rumble strip down the side and another down the middle of the road. rucks and tourist traffic for the show added to the problem. Surprisingly the biggest fear producer was the rumble strip down the center. P&J couldn't figure which rumble strip the traffic was crossing behind them. Scared the heck out of me too once I understood the problem...

      Thanks for the support..

  76. Wednesday 3/27

A lot of diversions today. Coming out of La Grange TX today P&J stopped in front of an art store in the small town of Ruterville. The owner rushed out of the store and offered cold water, overnight accommodations etc. Seems she is a nationally known friend to bikers along the southern route. Her home is open to them anytime. She showed P&J her entire operation including sleeping accommodations for 7 or 8 people at a time. Her name is Pat Wymore and her operation is Pat's Retreat and Art Farm.

The second was a little incident at a roadside rest stop. When Jan wandered off looking for a bush, Peg noticed a sign that said "Watch for Snakes". Peg immediately loudly relayed that information to Jan...I'll leave the rest of the story to your imagination...

Shortly after that the day was warming and the girls stopped on top of one of the many hills to take off their outer full length bike shorts. Peg managed to pull down not only the outer shorts but the inner ones and one layer below that briefly mooning the traffic. I've been married to that gal 49 years and never knew...

The last and biggest diversion was the Round Top TX Antiques Extravaganza. As mentioned earlier it is the largest show in the southwest. They claim it runs 39 miles long and is 29 days long.
We had to stop of course and spent the afternoon wandering around this thing. Vic was in heaven I think...I know he made some purchases...P&J had a great time and we only saw 1 towns worth of stuff. There were 5 more down the road.

We trucked about 10 or 12 miles past the traffic today. Great riding day through some of the prettiest roads we have seen to date. Central and east Texas this time of year is beautiful. Bluebonnets, and a reddish flower that Peg Thinks is Indian Paint Brush. They are mixed together in road ditches and whole pastures are a nice shade of blue with red splashes of color. Not only that, the trees and grass is green and it seems they have plenty of moisture. Dramatic change from what we have been seeing for a month or more. They got into Navasota a little and the bikes are getting a little loose and rattily. I took them both into a College Station shop to get tuned up and we will be taking Friday off. A fitting ending to MAP 4 of 7. They are looking forward to getting through Texas next week....

Nice day off. Vic and I put a new window in the camper. Not an easy job on an Airstream. Normally they are Glass and run about $450 because they are curves and of course out of production. For temporary repair we managed to cut and form Plexiglas into a window and it looks great. The camper is complete again..

P&J made dinner tonight as they do on off days in appreciation for what I do to support them. I am always a little embarrassed because I am enjoying the trip so much and they are the ones doing the work. I still don't think they understand what a great feat they are doing.

They had a very nice ride today through more beautiful east Texas landscapes. P&J tried a detour road today that had nice shoulders only to turn into a bad road about 8 miles into the trip. Turned around and went on the mapped road. They are glad they did because it took them through the Cagle recreation area and the Sam Huston National forest area.

We are spending the night in the Rocking E camp ground tonight. We will be taking the morning off to attend church. P&J want to experience a Cowboy Church before they leave Texas and there is one just south of Coldspring TX. We road ahead about 15 miles to get to a decent camping spot ao after church P&J will go back, cover the 15 miles and go on through to Sheperd or beyond depending on how they feel.

We arrived in the camp and were immediately invited to a pot luck supper. Great dinner to end the week with.

Went to the Cowboy church this morning and it was a very nice experience. These people are the salt of the earth. Just excellent people whose church clothes are best jeans, best shirt, biggest buckle and boots. Hats worn in church. 3 gals doing the singing and one had a child hanging onto her skirt sucking her thumb turning back and forth to the music and one a little older standing proudly in front clapping to the music with large arm swing claps. The minister has been preaching for about 10 years officially (He started preaching at age 16 unofficially) and is a ranch manager, horse farrier and trainer also. I think he preaches because he loves it.

P&J went back to the point we picked them up last night and started toward the town of Shepard Tx. today. Its 35 to 40 miles so they thought they could get it in today provided they don't get rained out. Skies are dark and I hear thunder so its iffy.

Now its raining so I think they will be back shortly...

Their back...made about 6 to 8 miles and it started but Vic made it back just as it started sprinkling. So people that got wet was Vic and me....

Almost 60 miles today. Nice day for riding with a light drizzle in the early morning and then partly cloudy with helpful winds for the day.

In Kountze last night. Found a camp ground in the Texas Big Thicket forest area. What is left of the big Thicket is now a managed preserve. At one time it spread from the north border of Texas down to the Houston area and is now a few thousand acres I guess. It was almost impenetrable or at least not worth the effort for a long time and then logging and other commercial activity seemed worth it. The gals coped with logging trucks all day but found that the truckers were very respectful and careful. Some of the loads were a little precarious so they kept a close eye on them.

Nice evening at the camp site last night and P&J are off to try to get close to the Louisiana border today. We will be through Texas today or tomorrow.

  85. Tuesday 4/2

The Campground Manager at Kountze last night tried to contact the local TV station to get an interview for us but was unable to get ahold of anyone at the late hour. Another gal, a title search contractor of companies trying to gain right of way easements for pipelines roads and other, gave P&J a little tiny jade good luck turtle. She got it from her grandchildren and during the next week won $4400.00 at the Casino. She figured she got her luck out of it and P&J to have what might be left. Next thing we knew Jan got a free wrap and a medium shake for the price of a small one. Not quite $4400 but something.

Couldn't find any campgrounds tonight so found a really nice place in Bleakwood Tx. took some phone calls but got permission to stay on the grounds of what looked to be a church school or Jr college campus at one time. We found out it was owned by a minister and finally got ahold of the owner. The site is now being converted to commercial use consisting so far of a church office, a tax service and a fine restaurant called Mama's Kountry Kitchen Family Restaurant and claims to be the finest food around. I would have to agree with that claim looking at the place the grounds around it and the people running it. I believe it's owned by Marva J. Williams and family. 409-420-0001. And, they are bike friendly. I guess if it was me I would turn a portion of the property into a campground because the closest one around is about 25 miles away.

All in all lovely people, bike friendly and a beautiful place to spend the night.

Weather really creating a slow down. 45 and light rain this morning with some promise of a warm up. P&J started with almost every piece of biking clothing they have on but still got cold and damp. At 3 this afternoon it was still cold and damp. Another day is better than riding in those conditions. Tomorrow is supposed to be better with improving conditions for the next week.

Tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches for dinner on a cold evening went very well last night.

  89. Friday 4/5

2 Directions today. First P&J rode back to the Texas Louisiana border to make up the miles we skipped to get into Deridder. Then after a ride back to Deridder they put another 30 on to get to Mattie La. We camped at a Pentecostal Church yard last night. Setting was beautiful and quiet.

It is wet here. We are used to the dry weather in the west where things dry out in an hour or two so when we find moisture on the windows and a towel that wont dry out it's a noticeable change.

It was a little sad leaving Texas because I think we all really liked Texas. Great arts community mixed with ranchers and farmers and that all mixed with antiquing, saloons, cows, goats and cactus. Ranches in the west measured in square miles and ranches in the east measured in a few acres. We didn't meet anyone we didn't like from people who wanted to pray for us to the interesting lady who told us that Texas men have a deathly fear of toilets.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Saturday 4/6

P&J corrected me on the little story about Texas men above and said All men in Texas have a deathly fear of indoor plumbing. I have to admit,It is funnier that way...and the girls wanted me to add that we had a discussion about speaking in tongues (Pentecostal) last night. They finally convinced me that the first time it happened it wasn't a bunch of Jewish men covering up their swear words with gibberish and the second time anyone locked up in a church in LA for a week wouldn.t be speaking gibberish.

Yesterday on the trip back to the border, there was a couple doing a ride from Nashville to Austin to raise funds for a charity organization called Compassion 575. It raises funds for children in south Asia. David riding and Sharon supporting.

Today P&J got nearly 60 in going from the church to the Chicot State Park between Ville Platte and Bunkie La. In Mamou La they encountered a pack of 250 bikers on a 4 day trip from and back to Lafayette LA. Its a group of bikers that do this every year celebrating Zydeco music. Seems that Mamou in Evangeline Parish is the center of Zydeco music. The bars were full and as we left I noticed a couple of riders sitting on the curb by their bikes head in hands looking like they may not finish the day...

    Very nice camp location again...

  91. Sunday 4/7

Our plan has been to take each Sunday morning off and attend a nearby church. This morning we stumbled upon the all black church called Morning Pilgrim Baptist Church in Chicot Bayou La. Had the pleasure of talking to an older gentleman who remembered when the first part of the church was built in 1940. He was raised on a farm nearby and never left. He is a Deacon, usher, church historian and many more things around the church I'm sure. 4 women made up the choir and what beautiful voices. They filled the room with music and P&J said if they had voices like that they would belt it out just like these 4 gals did. The service was joyous the singing was great and we also had delicious Sweet Potato Pie. They know how to make pie crust down here.

The ride was a short 35+ today because they didn't get started until 1:00. It took them by rice fields, crawfish ponds, with rows of small pots in them, and we believe cane fields. Weather was perfect and a helping wind all day.

As I was looking for a campground, I stopped at a Dollar Store and asked a man if there was a camp grounds nearby. He responded that all you people are setting up over at the fair ground. Seems there is a carnival setting up for some weeklong celebration in town and he thought we were part of the carnival.

Staying at another beautiful campsite tonight at the Paragon Casino on the Biloxi Indian Reservation.

P&J are looking forward to getting to Baton Rouge tomorrow. Its only 52 short miles away.

Well we did it. Stayed at a Wal-Mart Parking lot. We would have like to stay somewhere way in back of the store but the manager said its fine you can park here but park out front by the trees over there. It felt a little like a fish bowl but we got through it. Tovi thought it was very funny that her camping folks would stay at a Wal-Mart and through her giggles said don't pick up any souvenirs. All kidding aside it was worth doing. Wal-Mart is a great friend of the camper and vice-versa. They know a camper will go in planning on getting a loaf of bread and walk out with $100.00 worth of stuff.

Today P&J spent the day riding with a 25 ft levy on their right and bayou and poverty on the left. We drove over the mile long floodgate because of no shoulder and a high wall that gave them no place to go if something did happen. They had to ride hard today through strong head winds and somewhat drained of energy. I think its the dramatic change in weather that is dragging them down. Went from beautiful dry climate to this high humidity and high temps.

  94. Tuesday 4/9

Today we drove over to the east side of the Mississippi to start map 6 of 7. Started the ride today in St. Francisville LA on Highway 10 with nice wide shoulders. Went off route today and stayed on Hi 10. Stayed overnight at Greensburg which is a little southern town with a seldom used city park. The city clerk said go ahead and stay in the park but there is nothing down there. It was perfect. Quiet, large mowed lawns, water and toilets. Not good toilets but at least they were there.

P&J started talking about all the stuff they see along the road. It started with the notion that they are seeing more Armadillos here than they did west of here. Then Possums, Snakes, turtles a million bungee chords and even a cell phone. If they had started picking up Bungee chords when they started we could open up a store for used Bungee chords.

Hope to be in Bogalusa on the Mississippi border by tonight and a day off tomorrow. Forecast is for thunder storms tomorrow so a good day to rest.

  95. Wednesday 4/10

Greensville to Bogalusa today. 60 mile ride and P&J met the challenge with flying colors. The ride was hilly curving through some beautiful country side. Hills here are mostly gentle compared to the hills and mountains of the west. Again more of the mix of prosperity and poverty. They had a south east wind but the roads were lined with trees so very little effect.

Roads in Louisiana generally do not have shoulders. In the bayou country the roads are built up but very narrow. Most of that part of the state looks like every part that is above water level was built up by the people and built as efficiently as necessary.

In the Evangeline Parish area there is a mix of Bayou, forest and rolling fields that makes you understand why Wadsworth wrote about it in the poem Evangeline and why the Arcadians came here.

The eastern part of Louisiana is rolling hills and forest. The place where Audubon stayed for a few months to draw his pictures of birds.

We are continually surprised at the general decay, abandoned buildings and disrepair of the buildings and roads. Maybe its everywhere including around home but its more noticeable at 10 to 15 miles per hour.

In Bogalusa and a day off today. We all need a trim so P&J are out finding a beauty shop and I'm blogging at the McDonalds. I found a barber shop earlier this morning. I said something about it was good that they decided to take today off because with the lightening and thunder storms they probably couldn't ride much anyway. That comment was not well received and the silence was getting to me so decided to find something to do.

Bogalusa is on the Mississippi border and we are looking forward to getting through Mississippi and Alabama in the next few days. We go through the narrow part of both states so It wont take long. Then it's all Florida.

Tornado warnings right now with Tornado producing cells spotted just 12 miles south of Bogalusa. Its one of those rains that last all day that we seldom see in Minnesota anymore.

I know I talk about it often but maybe not often enough. I am continually amazed at what these gals can do. Yesterday was another amazing day. 60 miles through the rolling hills. At 40 miles I could tell they were worn out. They went on anyway and at the 50 mile mark they had there energy back and would have no problem with the last 10 miles.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm with you, can't believe they can/are doing this!! I think people move slower in the south and that decay/disrepair happens. By the time they decide to fix it, it's a lost cause! ;) Besides, all the humidity makes things rot fast. Snow, snow and more snow here. I think SW MN must be up to about 16" by now, or more. Dolli

  102. Friday 4/14

Bogalusa to 12 miles east of Wiggens MS. It was about a 60 mile ride today. Hills and curves on the roads. Essentially no shoulders on roads in Mississippi but the drivers were the most courteous P&J have encountered. Even the tree haulers were nice about it and slowed until they could safely pass. P&J said tonight they could tell good toots from bad toots...no no,I know what your thinking but they were talking about car horns.

Today they saw a snake crossing the road. As best they could tell it was black and what they first noticed was it was just slithering across the road. A second later and they wouldn't have seen it, Pegs preference and a second earlier they would have run over it. Later, after a little wine, the snake got bigger until it finally covered 1/2 the road. Then there was a discussion as to the wisdom of sitting in the grass on the side of the road eating their snacks every few miles.

We ended the 60 miles out in the center of the Desoto Forest and Wild life Area. We spotted a sign for the New Zion United Methodist church just 3 1/2 miles south of Hi 26. Typical Mississippi narrow road with lanes to somewhere but very few placed could be seen from the road. We found the church and no phone number on the sign. We decided to pull in and set up anyway. There were quite a few cars that went by, slowed but kept going. Later about 8:00 a truck with 3 men pulled up to say hello ask if we needed help and generally wanted to know what we were doing. When their curiosity was satisfied they welcomed us and left.

This morning as we were about ready to leave a lady pulled up to clean the church for the Sunday service. She first asked "Are these ladies really riding across America? Seem she had talked to the guys that stopped in the evening before and we are guessing that the whole congregation knew we were there and who we were by morning.

Pretty church and yard quiet surroundings and a very pleasant night.

Some how I got my days screwed up as Friday was the 12th and not the 14th,

Today is our grandson Alex's birthday. We just want to wish him happy birthday.

Today P&J went from the Church yard in the Desoto forest to Mobile Alabama. The traffic got really heavy so we trucked through most of Mobile including the I-10 tunnel under the Bay. P&J tell me that city riding is just no fun. Stop lights, pedestrian crossings and curbs just make it dangerous.

Tonight we are in Spanish Fort Alabama at the Meaher State Park. Its right on the bay looking back toward the Mobile skyline and the I-10 Causeway across the bay. When we checked in the Camp Host asked if we liked Catfish and I said yes thinking maybe there was an offer to join them for a catfish dinner. Then they told me they had just received two catfish from one of the campers who was fishing today and they didn't want them. Guess who is grilling catfish for dinner right now...

P&J rode from Spanish Fort AL to Milton FL. Busy ride with a lot of traffic and in Alabama there were few shoulders. They told me that today it was possums. The tail only of the first one and the whole flattened possum shortly after that. They see a lot of not to pleasant stuff on the road as you might imagine. Once they crossed the Florida Line they have had good roads with nice shoulders. A lot of the shoulders even have little bicycle pictures with arrows showing them which way to go....60 miles again today and in a lot of traffic as they crossed the northern part of Pensacola.

We met two interesting characters today. The first was a woman who was sitting outside her car under the overhead of an abandoned gas station. She had little flags decorating one of the old gas pumps, a hand written sign advertising book markers, a dog tied to her car that was very protective and growled if you approached and what looked like an easy chair she was sitting in. As soon as she saw a person approach she quieted the dog, got up, picked up two plastic bags and headed toward you out of reach of the watchful dog. She was selling little handmade bookmarkers with decals ironed on them. Some for a dollar and some 50 cents. We bought a couple of course and she seemed to really appreciate it. It looked like she lived in her car maybe right there in under the abandoned gas station canopy and might be a little disabled. We hoped she was in the system and just doing this to satisfy some business need rather than completely fending for herself.

The second person was parked next to us in the KOA in Milton Florida. Seems he and his wife live in their camper and earn their camp fees as much as possible from doing maintenance at the campsite. The had a newer 25 ft camper and an old ford pick up to pull it. Not sure how well the job situation worked out he was gone by the time we got up this morning. Anyway his last business was raising Large Mouth Bass baby fish for Private ponds. I kind of wonder how that worked out...

P&J had a quiet evening trying to figure out which route to take tomorrow.

  110. Tuesday 4/16

P&J rode from Milton to De Funiak Springs Florida. P&J rode some very rural Country today. It started with a 10 mile bike trail that connected to a series of un-numbered roads through the Black Water River State Forest. Trail/road names like Black Water Trail, Indian Ford Road, Bryant Bridge road and Johns Road. More Hills than expected in Florida but the hills are river valleys running to the gulf. At the bottoms its usually fairly narrow but looks like bayou country.

Very rural in this part of Florida. Farms, ranches, logging and state forest projects. The state forest areas were full of signs describing experimental projects that were going on.

Camped just north of De Funiak Springs at what is described as a fishing camp since most of the recreational activity in that area is fishing. For my grandson Alex, they fish for Largemouth Bass, Brim, Crappies and Catfish. I talked to a guy just hocking up his boat and he said the fishing was not good right now because the rivers and lakes were running 4-6 feet higher than normal.

The camp ground was great and we all agreed had the best showers we've ever seen. A series of 10 or so individual private bathrooms in a building complete with Sink/vanity, stool and shower.

Had dinner outside and talked about the end of the trip coming up pretty soon. We have gotten to like this nomadic life and don't want it to end. On the other hand we all miss friends and family and especially the grand children.

P&J think they want to do a long trip again next year. Its going to cost them a lot of Gin and Tonic water if I'm going to support them.

De Funiak Springs to Marriana Florida. Started the last map today from De Funiack Springs to St. Augustine Florida. We have about 400 to go.

P&J had a nice day today with no wind and shoulders all the way. Well not all the way. In towns the roads seem to go to 4 lane and have curbs but P&J are now riding that also. They have found that is they act like they own the road they get along just fine.

Interesting evening in that we met Cheryl of Cheryl and Shirley who are camped just 2 spaces over from us. Seems they started on the southern route from San Diego about 1 week after us and just caught up with us. Similarities...Two women (Cheryl and Shirley) both 63, riding the southern route and supported by the husband of one of them. They ride a little harder but Cheryl said they don't stop to see many of the sites. They are doing exactly what we are doing. They found the formula too. They are Blogging on crazyguyonabike.com and under the journals area its bucketfullofadventure. Jan went in to the blog tonight and found that Tim from Seattle (who we met in the Imperial Valley) is also on that blog and is very near us. We thought we were slow and its comforting to find others that have gone about the same speed.

Marianna to Quincy Florida about 25 miles west of Tallahassee. Beautiful country, still very rural and hilly. We are staying a Ingrams Marina Resort which reminds me of any Canadian Fishing resort. As a matter of fact it is a fishing resort on Lake Talquin. Talquin is a 50 mile long lake created by a Dam at the south end. Very pretty and apparently a good producer since I see quite a few boats here.

P&J took a short day today with a 47 mile ride. After several days of 60 or near 60 miles they wanted a short day. We could have stayed at the Walmart in Quincy and stayed closer to the route but it looks like we might get rained out tomorrow and drove 10 miles south of the route to have a pleasant place to spend a day if needed.

P&J were mentioning how different male cyclists react to their ride across the US. They met one person who was interested in their training. They said we didn't do anything special we just started out. They were asked if they do any special stretches. No, if something gets sore we might stretch that muscle a little. How about diet, any energy bars or drinks. No they said, we have bagels with PB&J and orange juice then take a banana an orange and a protein bar from the grocery store for breaks and lunch and then what ever Adolph has ready for us in the evening. Add a little beer and wine and that's it. That was the end of the questions.

In another case they went over to a couple who were riding together across the us east to west. They were camping in a soggy area but the man completely dismissed them as if they shouldn't even be doing this. P&J think that the way they are doing the ride and the fun they are having may diminish the effort a little for some.

P&J hope they can ride tomorrow. Now that they see the end they want to keep chopping away at it.

Yes Wes the weather is having an impact. This morning P&J watched the radar and thought they could ride for awhile and at least get to Tallassee today. They started out and after a few miles they were drenched with a downpour. They called it off and we loaded up to drive the 20 remaining miles to Tallassee and found a camp site. They plan on going back to Quincy in the morning and riding that 20 because the road was beautiful with fairly large hills and a good shoulder. If its still raining tomorrow they plan on doing that Sunday afternoon.

P&J needed a day off anyway. Peggy's butt is sore after the several near 60 mile days in the past week. It could be the bike shorts so today we went shopping for new shorts. The new shorts cost at least 3 to 4 times the price of the shorts. Imagine P&J in a Sports Authority Store with a clearance sale on women's sports apparel. They had fun though and found stuff they would never find in RWF or Brainerd. They look good too.

We are camped under a typical southern tree called a live oak with a lot of moss on it. Unusual to us so several pictures will be taken.

Cold wind this morning but P&J went back to near Quincy and finished that portion of the ride then took off for Monticello FLA. HI way 90 continues to be a great road to ride. Good shoulders on most of it and rolling hills.

As we got into Monticello there was a Jazz and Bluegrass festival going on so we decided to take it in. We got to hear some great Bluegrass, Rock and Jazz. Yesterday it got rained out so attendance was low. That caused todays low attendance they tell us. The musicians all showed up but I guess only the loyal fans showed.

Far anyone interested, Pegs butt is fine.

P&J say the riding is a little boring since it seems they are in a tunnel with trees on either side of the road. Our west they had changing vistas all of the time it seemed. And it was changing. You go 5 miles or as the sun changes, things look different.

Today was from Monticello to the Suwannee River State Park. The ride was fairly easy today. 47 miles of rolling hills, good shoulders and lite winds. They are taking it a little easy these last few days because we have reservations in Daytona Beach starting on the 28th. We are getting in a little early because P&J put in a really good week last week with 60 mile days gaining 2 days. Now the plan is to get to St Augustine on Wednesday and then spend a day there then ride down the coast to Daytona Beach which makes up for the miles they missed. That should be a 2 day ride with beach stops and shopping. We will spend a few days at Ocean Walk in Daytona and then hit the road for home. Hope to be there may 3 or 4.

Today P&J saw a live snake again that was somewhere between 1 and 3 feet depending on who you talk to. After that scare, their imagination took over and Peg worried about the snake getting wound up in the spokes or gear chain and whipping around hitting her leg and getting angry and biting her and on and on...

As an aside, Peg read that this is the river that Stephen Foster wrote about but be had no emotional tie to it. It was simply a pretty sounding two syllable word for his song.

Suwannee River start park to a little town called Lake Baker. Nothing there so we went to Starke to find a good camp ground. We need full hook ups in order to dry Jan's bed. It rained very hard during the night and the new window Vic and I put in leaked. Now Vic did want to put silicone on it the day we put it in but I said no, we can get it during one of our 10 mile stops. He argued a little but I insisted we needed something to do later. Then every time it rained a little Peg would remind me to fix it.

Well needless to say, I'm in the doghouse today. Jan's sheets and pillow got soaked and they went to the dryer this morning and now we have had the heater blowing hot air on the Mattress since about 4 pm (now 4 hours)to try to get it dry. I got the window calked right away this morning and it took about 1/2 hour but it still feels a little chilly in here.

Probably to Green Cove Springs tomorrow leaving a 40 mile ride for Wednesday ending the official ride.

This morning was a typical beautiful Florida morning. Sun and shade with a gentle breeze. A lady walked by us and made mention of how nice it turned yesterday afternoon and today. Both P&J turned and gave me the look. I continue to tell them that fixing the window had nothing to do with the weather but....

From Butler Lake to Green Cove Springs. The ride was nice with wide shoulders but a little headwind. Traffic was not bad I guess. They expect it to get a lot busier tomorrow. We got into Green Cove Springs and I had not found a spot to park for the night when P&J arrived. As we were asking around about city parks, campgrounds etc P&J noticed a Policeman that was just wrapping up his school crossing duties. They had a nice discussion and we ended up spending the night at Governors' landing in Green Cove Springs. Right next to the landing was the annex police station he was assigned to. Very nice evening sitting at a picnic bench right next to the St. Johns River talking about the trip.

They wanted to say thank you for all the well wishes and kind words...From Peg Jan and Adolph Thank you.

Well, were in St. Augustine. P&J added a few miles today and made it over 40. The ride was through some beautiful River country with Live oaks, hanging moss and large beautiful homes. In St Augustine you don't actually get to the beach so we took some video and pictures in St. Augustine and will take some beach pictures here at the Anastasia State Park just 4 miles SE of St Augustine tomorrow.

P&J are going to spend tomorrow touring and shopping St Augustine and then on Friday start the ride down Hi 1 and Hi 1A1 down the coast to Daytona Beach where we will spend a few days at Ocean Walk. That 60 plus miles makes up a few of the miles of dangerous road situations they decided not to ride.

A day of shopping and exploring the beautiful city of St Augustine. Although it looks a little like New Orleans the effort is to make it British of old. This was a British stronghold during the revolutionary war. Jan somehow managed to wound herself last night. Her and Peg decided to ride from the camp site down to the beach. On the way back they missed a turn and Jan tried to make a sharp u-turn to get back on course. After riding nearly 3000 miles with out incident, she fell and the large front sprocket managed to make about 10 gouges on her leg one for each sprocket tooth.

Before going into St Augustine we managed to get pictures of P&J on the beach with their bikes. All in all a very nice day.

Easy access, lots of room, tide permitting you can drive onto the beach and park and get out on the beach right next to it. Its well maintained especially in the Ocean Walk and Hilton area.

On Sunday we checked into Ocean Walk and Ocean Walk isn't bad either with two indoor pools, two outdoor pools a float river and direct access to the beach. We are on the 19th floor looking over the pools and the ocean. Soft breezes and the pelicans are flying by below us.

Another couple days of wind down and I think P&J will be ready to head for home. I'm ready...
